Walking from Hateg to Caransebes, to the left on a side road running through villages of Hunedoara county, one reaches Densus (10 km distance), where the most unusual church from Romania is found. This is also one of the oldest, dated (in the actual configuration, probably) back in the XIIIth century. Some historians believe that the place was built on the foundation of a pre-Christian altar. The church is weird, as if it was composed of inhomogeneous parts. It is mainly made of stones, apparently many pieces being taken from Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana, an old roman fortress. The supporting pillars, stones and slabs were used along with river rocks and bricks.
Inside the church there are four central pillars supported by big roman slabs covered with inscriptions and bas-reliefs. The mural painting, which partially decorates the interior, is dated back in the first half of the XV-th century.
