At the edge of the Retezat Mountains, on a rock peak, the Colt fortress is found. The site was built by the Candea's family from Rau de Mori (The Mills River), at the beginning of the 14-th century. The fortress had a defense role, being the most powerful fortress of Transylvania.

At the foot of the rock there is a fortified church built during the same time by the Candesti. On the church walls small areas of the original paintings are still preserved. Near the church a monk Monastery is developing. Here you can ask for help and guidance to find the fortress.

To go to the ruins, one should climb through the forest for about 30 min, best accompanied by a local guide, because there are no road signs. The high location dominates the neighborhood and the view of the surrounding valleys is overwhelming.

The legend says that in the 19 th century, the famous French writer Jules Verne visited the fortress together with a mysterious woman, which later became the source of inspiration for the novel The Carpathian Castle.
