On the road between Ramnicu Vilcea and Tg. Jiu one has the opportunity to visit the Polovragi cave located in the Oltetului Canyon.
Once in the Gorj County, on the right hand side of the road, far away, you can admire a deep and narrow cleavage in the mountains: these are the Oltetului Quays that you can easily reach if you turn right on the road to Polovragi Monastery, through the Polovragi village. The Quays are just behind the Monastery (turning round to the right) very narrow, with abrupt walls dug in chalk-stone. The Oltet River splits the Capatanii Mountains to the East from the Parang Mountains to the West and dug the Polovragi cave during the old times. The site is situated at about 200 de meters from the Quays entry on the left slope. The legend says that the cave was known even back during the Dacian times. Moreover, on the slope above the cave, at about 1000 height, the ruins of a Dacian fortress were discovered, dating back the II-nd century B.C.

The cave is long, about 27 km of it being mapped (according to the guide's knowledge). It is worth while to see the electrified 900 meters, especially that the temperature is constant regardless the season (10 degrees), the air is fairly humid and has no currents.
